ABOUT MATT PHILLEO

Hello there, I'm Matt Philleo. My journey as an artist didn't begin in the glow of an innate talent but in the shadow of a challenge. Since my youth, when I discovered I lagged behind in drawing, I've carried a relentless spirit that turned a humble beginning into a passionate career in art.

When I was about eight years old, my mother encouraged me to draw. She even featured my comic strip in her newsletter! By the time I was teenager, I learned how to draw realistically, and yet the idea of using color captivated me—so I began acrylic painting. However, like many beginning artists, I struggled to overcome paints drying too quickly, blotchiness, and a chalky, flat, lifeless color on my canvas.

I wanted to give up!

Fortunately, during a transformative high school workshop with university instructor Norbert Kox, I learned the glazing technique that reshaped my frustrations with acrylic into a profound love for its possibilities. My paintings that were previously dull and lifeless were now rich and vibrant! Suddenly, I found myself truly enjoying the process of painting with acrylics!

Post-art school life wove through various roles divergent from my passion. I took on a lot of different jobs to make ends meet.

But it was a thought-provoking conversation with my mother-in-law, in the aftermath of the 2008 recession, that redirected my path firmly towards the arts. Despite the financial uncertainties, my leap into full-time artistry was a profound exercise in faith and perseverance—challenges that were met with timely commissions and unwavering support, especially from my wife.

It was worth it. Over the last several years, I have had the privilege to teach hundreds of artists all over the world how to paint beautiful portraits they can be proud of!

As an artist, I approach each canvas with prayer, acknowledging that God helps me to paint better. Every piece is a journey—sometimes tough and demanding—and it's in those moments of challenge that real growth happens. It's not just in the finished artwork, but in the process itself, where perseverance takes root and blossoms.

I believe that one should never wield your talent as a tool for self-service
to tear down another. Instead, I choose to construct, lift, and dignify. The
paintbrush is mightier when moved with purpose and heart. I'm here to guide, to inspire, and to witness the unveiling of your hidden artist. Because within every one of us resides the potential for great art, sometimes all we need is a little faith and a brush laden with color!

Welcome to my world of color, faith, and creativity—where every portrait holds a story, and every brushstroke is a step towards mastery.
